FLOOD DISASTER RELIEF IN KOSHI BARRAGE AREA OF SUNSARI DISTRICT (FDRKBASD) |
||||||||||||||||
On August 18, 2008
the Koshi River was fully swollen above the line of danger and the 47
doors of the dam out of 56 were closed. Heavy monsoon rain and flood in
Koshi River was threatening people some thing unpleasant to happen. At
about 1.30 am (local time) the frail embankment was smashed by the swollen
and strong current of Koshi River to flooding over 4 Village Development
Committees (VDC)-provinces. Severe and frantic destruction begun to play
over 50,000 human population and an equal number of farm, companion and
wild animals. The flood is now receding (from 23rd August 2008) gradually but it may take several weeks, till the renovation of the embankment, for a complete escape because the water of Koshi River is submerging and cutting the land of the affected area leaving no thing behind but a bed of mud and sand. The river has shifted its course 1.5 km towards east, sweeping away large chunk of land in Shripur VDC keeping the villagers and local authorities confounded for further havoc as the river has changed its regular course. POTENTIAL PROBLEMS OF FLOOD HIT AREAS Animals of the affected area mainly have to starve for fresh water, food and shelter. They have to face diseases arising from contaminated water and degradation of immunity power and energy due to the lack of adequate and hygienic food. Incidences of diseases like pneumonia, bronchitis, infection from internal as well as external parasites…….. and an out break of pandemic disease like……… have more probability of occurrence in the flood hit areas. Injuries like lacerated and infected wounds, leg break,…would be commonly found in the affected area. |
